Dear Fellow Xaverians,
Some responsibilities are accepted with the mind. A few are accepted with the heart.
For me, the privilege of serving as Head of the UAE Chapter of the St. Xavier’s College Calcutta Alumni Association belongs firmly to the latter.
St. Xavier’s is not simply an institution where we once studied. It is a part of our identity, our values, our friendships and, in many ways, our understanding of what it means to succeed with purpose.
Founded in 1860 by the Society of Jesus, St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata, has for more than a century and a half stood for excellence in education, character, discipline, compassion and service. Generations of Xaverians have passed through its classrooms and corridors and gone on to contribute to business, public life, academia, science, culture, the professions and society at large.
But the true strength of St. Xavier’s has never been measured only by academic achievement.
Its greatest legacy is the people it creates.
People who are expected not merely to do well in life, but to do good.
That is why the role of an Alumni Association carries such importance.
We are not simply a network of former students. We are the continuing ambassadors of the institution that shaped us. Through our conduct, our contribution and our willingness to serve, the values of St. Xavier’s continue far beyond the gates of the College.
I believe our Alumni movement must continue to grow around four powerful pillars:
Knowledge. Philanthropy. Culture. Networking.
Knowledge must remain at the heart of everything we do. We must create platforms where accomplished professionals, entrepreneurs, academics and thought leaders can exchange ideas and help our community understand a rapidly changing world.
Philanthropy must remain equally central. Education acquires its highest meaning when knowledge is combined with empathy and when success inspires us to reach out to those who have been less fortunate.
Culture and the arts must also remain an important part of our collective life. Music, theatre, literature and creativity strengthen communities and remind us that education is not merely about careers — it is about becoming fuller human beings.
And here in the UAE, one of the world’s most dynamic commercial centres, we have a special opportunity to create a powerful Xaverian professional and business network.
Our members represent diverse industries, professions and generations. If we connect meaningfully, our network can create mentorship, careers, partnerships, investment opportunities, business collaborations and lifelong friendships.
But meaningful networking must begin with a simple principle:
Before asking what the network can do for us, let us ask what we can do for another Xaverian.
The year 2026 has already demonstrated this spirit through several initiatives of our UAE Chapter.
Our contribution towards St. Xavier’s Raghabpur Campus strengthened our continuing connection with the educational and social mission of our parent institution.
During Ramadan, our distribution of Iftar meals to workers in labour camps reminded us that compassion transcends religion, nationality and social position.
On World Water Day, distributing drinking water to motorcyclists and others working outdoors was a simple but meaningful act of care.
Our Knowledge Sessions have brought members and professionals together to discuss subjects such as business, technology and Artificial Intelligence — areas that will increasingly shape our lives and professions.
Each initiative may be different in scale and character.
But each carries the same Xaverian message:
Knowledge must be shared. Success must create opportunity. And privilege must carry responsibility.
Looking ahead, our ambition must be greater.
I would like to see the UAE Chapter become an even stronger platform bringing together Xaverians and their families across the Emirates.
Let our senior members mentor the younger generation.
Let our entrepreneurs create opportunities.
Let our professionals share expertise.
Let our younger alumni bring new technology, energy and ideas.
Let us organise more programmes in Artificial Intelligence, finance, healthcare, entrepreneurship, leadership, sustainability and the professions of tomorrow.
Let us continue to support education and philanthropy.
Let us celebrate theatre, music, literature and the arts.
And let us ensure that whenever there is an opportunity to serve society, Xaverians are present.
At the same time, our vision must never remain confined to the UAE.
We look forward to contributing even more meaningfully to the country that has given so many of us extraordinary opportunities, while remaining deeply connected to our parent organisation in Kolkata and to the wider worldwide Xaverian family.
We shall continue our journey under the guidance and blessings of our President, Rev. Dr. Dominic Savio, SJ, drawing strength from the values and traditions that have guided generations before us.
As I accept this responsibility, I do so with one firm belief:
No Chapter is built by one person. It is built by a community.
I therefore invite every Xaverian in the UAE to participate, contribute, suggest, mentor, support and dream with us.
Let us not measure our success merely by the number of events we organise.
Let us measure it by the knowledge we spread, the opportunities we create, the friendships we strengthen and the lives we touch.
St. Xavier’s gave us more than an education.
It gave us confidence, friendships, values and a sense of purpose.
Now comes our opportunity to give something back.
Years from now, may we be able to say that during our time, the UAE Chapter became not merely larger, but more meaningful; not merely better connected, but more compassionate; not merely successful, but useful to society.
That, perhaps, would be the finest tribute we could offer to the institution that gave us so much.
And as we move forward together, may the words that have inspired generations of Xaverians continue to guide us:
NIHIL ULTRA
Nothing Beyond.
